ESU 13 Technology

Open Source

December 8th, 2007

ESU 13 has been exploring a number of open source web applications. The ESU is currently running Moodle (Learning Management), Elgg (Blogging), Wordpress mu (Blogging), MediaWiki (Wiki), Drupal (Learning Management), Gallery (Photo Storage), and Survey PHP (Survey tool). These are all web based applications that have been installed on a Linux box running Apache, PHP, and MySQL. A recent article from Technology and Learning shares information about Linux and a wide variety of other open source software. One of the most interesting parts of the article is the sidebar that contains free open source software (FOSS) alternatives for nearly any application you may currently be using. Edubuntu is an educational version of the Ubuntu release of Linux. It also contains numerous educational applications as well. One of the interesting options of this release is the server and thin client option. Schools could use antiquated equipment to build a functional network.
